Dwarf Japanese Cedar is a highly-desirable small, mounded evergreen bush, with soft foliage of a delicate green coloring. It will grow slowly into an irregular mound several feet tall and across. It is perfectly hardy throughout zone 6, and in sheltered spots in warmer parts of zone 5. In winter the foliage takes on attractive warm rusty-red tones characteristic of this plant. Grow it as part of the foundation planting around your home – it will grow beneath windows, or fill bare corners, as well as hiding ugly features like air-conditions and meters. Plant it in your shrub beds to give permanent structure to them and provide a setting for flowering plants. Fill spaces between boulders with it, in a rocky, low-maintenance garden. Use this plant in Asian-themed gardens, since it comes from Japan, and is widely grown in gardens there. It can even be grown for years in a planter or large pot, to give permanent decoration to a terrace or patio.
Your Dwarf Japanese Cedar will grow well in a sunny spot, with some afternoon shade in hotter areas if the soil is a little dry. It grows best in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic material. Keep young plants well-watered, and don’t let mature plants suffer under conditions of extended drought. It has no significant pests or diseases, and does not need trimming to maintain it dense, mounded form. Plants will develop more character and charm if they are left untrimmed.
