Koster’s Hinoki Cypress is one of the most beautiful of all the dwarf evergreens grown in gardens. It is also very easy to grow – which is always a winning combination. This tree grows slowly, reaching perhaps 2 feet tall after 10 years, so you need never worry about it getting out of control, even in the smallest garden. Use it with other dwarf shrubs to make a magical garden of exquisite plants. It has beautiful fan-shaped sprays of foliage, growing in layers as it develops and matures. The evergreen foliage is an attractive glossy olive-green, with the new growth being lighter in spring. It is an ideal plant for an Asian-themed garden, or for growing in a planter or container. It looks perfect growing among gravel and boulders, with other dwarf evergreens of different forms.
Plant Koster’s Hinoki Cypress is a sunny or lightly shaded area. It is hardy from zone 4 to zone 8, so it will grow well almost anywhere. It will thrive in most well-drained soils, doing best in moist, rich soil. Young plants should be watered regularly, but established plants will be untroubled by normal dry summer weather. This beautiful plant has no pests or diseases of any importance, and it needs no trimming or pruning to keep its beautiful form. If you want beauty, but not a lot of gardening work, this is the perfect choice.
