The Red Carpet Barberry is a broad, low ground-cover shrub growing no more than 18 inches tall, but spreading up to 4 feet across. It is ideal for filling spaces in large or small gardens, and a few plants go a long way. Use it in the foreground of your beds, as an edging plant along paths and driveways, or among rocks and on slopes ā wherever you grow it this hardy plant will thrive and need virtually no care at all. The spring leaves are bright orange, turning burgundy for summer and fall, and the twigs carry a crop of red berries in fall and early winter, which are a valuable food for wild birds.
The Red Carpet Barberry will grow in any sunny spot, and in dry places too. Any well-drained soil suits it just fine, and even rough ground and rocks are no obstacle. It has no significant pests or diseases, and it can be clipped at any time of year to keep it even lower, and neater, if you wish to. For ground-cover, space plants 2Ā½ to 3 feet apart, scattering them randomly, not in rows, for the best natural effect.
