Pink Kousa Dogwood Tree

The Pink Kousa Dogwood is a small tree with layered, spreading branches, growing between 15 and 20 feet tall, and spreading at least as wide. It flowers 2 or 3 weeks after the American flowering dogwood, once the leaves have opened fully. However, the flowering is so profuse that the leaves are hidden by the beautiful large, pink blooms of this tree. Flowering is followed in late summer and fall by hanging strawberry-like fruits, which are edible (but uninteresting). The fall color of this tree is spectacular, with oranges, golds, and brilliant reds lighting up your garden. The bark in winter has interesting patterns of tan, gray and orange.

The Pink Kousa Dogwood is easier to grow than the American flowering dogwood, and less prone to diseases. It grows best in richer soils that are moist but well-drained, and alkaline soils are not suitable. It is hardy in zones 5 to 8 and it grows in all areas that don’t have very dry summers. Water regularly during dry periods. Pests and diseases are not major issues, and deer don’t bother with it. An outstanding tree that is worth the little attention it may need. No pruning is required.
