The Snow Queen™ Hydrangea is a rounded shrub growing to about 6 feet tall, with large lobed leaves. In summer each stem is topped with a very large cone of snow-white flowers, held up on strong stems. These turn pink in late summer, and the leaves turn red to purple in fall. Grow this plant in beds or woodlands, beneath trees or in full sun. This selection of a native shrub is perfect for natural gardens, and it won the Philadelphia Horticultural Society Gold Medal for Garden Merit in 1989.
Much more sun-resistant and able to tolerate drier soil than other hydrangeas, the Snow Queen™ Hydrangea grows best in rich, moist soil, which should be well-drained. It doesn’t suffer from pests or diseases and deer leave it alone. It needs no pruning, and the stems should not be shortened back in spring, as these carry the new flowers. This fast-growing shrub is striking and beautiful, yet it is easy to grow with no special attention.
