The Shorty Leyland Cypress is just what it sounds like – a compact version of the popular and reliable Leyland Cypress. That fast-growing evergreen can be too large for smaller gardens, so there we suggest using this selected dwarf form instead. Just as reliable and tough, but slower growing, it will still be just 5 feet tall after 6 years of growth, even if never trimmed. Its compact growth is dense enough to use it untrimmed as a specimen in shrub beds, and a light annual trim is all it takes for the perfect shorter hedge.
The Shorty Leyland Cypress grows best in full sun, but it will take an hour or two of shade each day without trouble. It is hardy in zones 6, 7 and 8, and it will grow easily in ordinary garden soils, as long as they are well-drained. It has good drought tolerance once it is well established, but still benefits from a deep soaking during long dry spells. It normally has no pests or diseases, and stays healthy and vigorous, although it is not resistant to deer. It can be trimmed anytime between late spring and mid-fall.
