The Climbing Hydrangea is that rare thing – a self-supporting climbing plant to cover a shady wall with foliage and flowers. Its peeling chestnut-colored bark is handsome in winter, and the large, serrated green leaves create a beautiful curtain to soften blank walls, or cover old fences. It can also be used to hide tree stumps and dead trees, as well as forming a ground cover over shady areas beneath trees. In May and June large, flat flower heads appear, with small greenish-white flowers surrounded by larger white ones, creating an attractive ‘lacecap’ effect. These are followed by reddish brown seed heads that are conspicuous once the leaves fall and become a feature in late fall and winter.

  • Vigorous climber for shady walls and fences
  • Large white ‘lacecap’ flowers in early summer
  • Attractive deep green foliage
  • Covers large areas once established
  • Hide unsightly stumps and dead trees

The Climbing Hydrangea is hardy even in zone 4, and it thrives in cooler, rainy climates of the northeast and northwest. It grows best in moist, rich soil, so add organic material when planting, and mulch regularly with more. It has no significant pests and diseases and once established it grows vigorously and well. This climbing plant is a valuable low-maintenance choice for those difficult shady walls around your home.
