The Blushing Bride Hydrangea is the first re-blooming pure white hydrangea. Its semi-double white blooms fill large flower heads, and as they mature they turn pale pink on alkaline soil, and pale blue to purple on acid soil. This superb plant blooms on older shoots from the previous year, starting in late spring, and also on new shoots that develop from the base and begin to bloom in late summer. Flower heads are effective for 16 weeks, so your bush will never be out of bloom. In zone 5, especially after a hard winter, you will still have blooms on the new shoots. Plant in shady parts of the garden, under trees or on the north-side of a wall. Use as a low screen, or to fill beds with elegant and stylish white blooms that glow from the dark, especially on summer evenings. Give it as a gift to mark that special time in a woman’s life.
The Blushing Bride Hydrangea will grow from zone 5 to zone 9, and it is a reliable bloomer. Plant it in moist, rich, well-drained soil, enriched with compost, and mulch each spring with more compost. Water regularly, especially when young. This variety is resistant to the common disfiguring disease of powdery mildew, which makes hydrangeas look dusty and tired in summer. It also develops wonderful fall colors of yellow, orange and red, which is very rare in mophead hydrangeas.
