The Mushroom Japanese Cedar is a broad, mounding evergreen with a soft, airy look and feel. It forms a mound about 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide in 10 years, adding 2 or 3 inches a year throughout its life. In spring the foliage is bright green, turning darker green in summer, but its main attraction is the vibrant purple-brown foliage that develops in winter, when the temperatures fall. It turns back to green again in the spring. Plant it as a specimen in a smaller garden, in an Asian-themed area, and alone or in groups in garden beds. Use it effectively in containers and planters, or in the foundation planting around your home.
Grow the Mushroom Japanese Cedar in any ordinary well-drained soil, in full sun, or in light partial shade. It should be watered regularly when young, and during dry spells. It needs no trimming to keep its beautiful form, and almost no care, becoming more and more beautiful as time passes. It is hardy from zone 6, and in sheltered spots in zone 5 as well. It has no important pests or diseases, and anyone can grow this beautiful plant.
