Japanese Littleleaf Boxwood is the top-choice boxwood if you live in colder zones, and a great choice everywhere for medium to larger-sized purposes. It has the smallest leaves of all the boxwoods, so it creates a very dense and uniform surface. Grow this shrub – which can grow 3 to 8 feet tall – as a mounding, un-clipped evergreen for a natural look, or clipped into small and medium-sized hedges, balls, pyramids, and a host of other formal shapes. Nothing beats boxwood for that classic look, and every garden needs some touches of boxwood to tie your design together.

  • Dense form with tiny leaves – easy to clip
  • Perfect for medium-sized hedges and clipped bushes
  • Looks great unclipped in less formal gardens
  • Hardy to zone 5 and lower with shelter
  • Grows well everywhere, except for deep shade

Grow Japanese Littleleaf Boxwood in sun, partial-shade or light full-shade. It grows everywhere from zones 5 to 9, and it is both cold-hardy and resistant to heat and humidity. It grows well in any soil, so long as it is well-drained, and it is moderately drought tolerant. Regular fertilizer and attention to summer watering will give the most rapid growth – lush and green. Pests and diseases are rarely problems, and even deer and rabbits usually leave it alone. This easy plant is useful everywhere, but especially in colder regions where European boxwood will not grow well.
