Teddy Arborvitae

The Teddy Arborvitae is a wonderful dwarf evergreen that feels just like a plush teddy-bear. It grows slowly into an upright, rounded globe, 2 feet tall and 1 foot wide after ten years and adding about 2 inches of growth every year. The foliage is soft and feathery, not stiff, as it is in most arborvitae, adding to the ‘hug appeal’ of this great plant. It is amazingly hardy, right into zone 3, so wherever you are, you can grow it. Use it in planters or troughs, or with other dwarf evergreens in a dedicated garden bed. Add it to beds as a highlight, and it is especially useful in smaller gardens. It also clips well, and it can be used to create a low hedge in areas where traditional boxwood will not grow.

The Teddy Arborvitae grows best in full sun or light partial shade. It grows in any ordinary soil that is not constantly wet, and once established it has moderate resistance to dry periods. It naturally forms a dense, upright mound of slender branches without any need to clip, but it can also be clipped anytime between spring and late summer. This plant is a great choice to introduce smaller children to the world of growing plants.
