The Helmond Pillar Barberry is a very striking vertical deciduous shrub, growing 4 or 5 feet tall, but staying just 1 or 2 feet wide. It has rich, deep-purple to red leaves, which hold their color throughout spring and summer, and then turn bright red in fall. The tight column of upright stems needs no trimming to keep its form, and the spines on the branches make this plant perfect to keep out 2-legged and 4-legged intruders. Use it alone in smaller spaces as a strong vertical accent, or in groups as part of larger plantings. It is perfect to slip into those gaps that naturally occur in shrub beds, and it can also be grown as a narrow barrier for a small space. Hardy in almost every zone, both cold and hot, this easy and reliable shrub can be used effectively in every garden.
Grow the Helmond Pillar Barberry in full sun for the best color. In partial shade it will grow, but the leaf color will be more greenish. It will grow in almost any soil, as long as it is well-drained. Water regularly when newly planted, but once established this plant is very drought resistant and easy to care for. It rarely suffers from pests or diseases, and rabbits and deer leave it alone. For great color contrast and visual accent, combined with easy growth and low maintenance, this shrub canāt be beaten.
