The Himalayan cedar is usually a large, upright tree with spreading branches, and even the low-growing forms that exist become large in time. If you want the beauty of this tree in a smaller plant, then the Silver Mist Himalayan Cedar is for you. Not only is this slow-growing beauty going to remain small and manageable, it is also one of the most striking varieties of Himalayan cedar, with incredible near-white new growth that gives it a cloud-like, misty look that is almost unique among evergreens. Growing about 6 inches a year it could be 4 feet tall in a short 10 years, forming a tight broad cone of horizontal branches with gracefully weeping tips. Grow it as a striking specimen in a rock garden, or on a slope among other interesting evergreens. Allow room for it to spread and don’t plant it too close to other plants or its wonderful conical form will be lost. This very special plant is ideal for special spots in your garden, or even for growing in a large planter as a unique feature on a terrace. It could also be developed into a wonderful bonsai tree.

  • Striking broad cone of horizontal branches with weeping tips
  • Needles are green, but new growth is white, giving an amazing misty look
  • A smaller plant suitable for smaller gardens and also for large pots
  • Grows best in regions with dry summers and mild winters
  • Can be trimmed by hand to keep it small

Plant the Silver Mist Himalayan Cedar in full sun, which will give the strongest, most compact growth. Grow it in any well-drained soil, preferably neutral or acidic, and avoid heavy, wet soils. Very drought tolerant once established, but benefits from a deep soaking during extended dry periods. Not eaten by deer and rarely troubled by any pests or diseases. To keep the conical form, only allow one vertical shoot to develop. It can be trimmed by hand, with pruners, to keep it more compact. Cut back to just in front of a shoot on top of the branch, as this will then develop, hiding the cut and keeping a natural look. Probably best left untrimmed if you have room for it to spread in time.
