The Mops Mugo Pine is widely grown, because this selected variety is guaranteed to remain small and compact, and give you the dense, rounded form that is so coveted for this great evergreen. We asked our growers to raise it up on a short trunk, creating a fabulous miniature pine tree that is perfect where you want so height without adding much width. This great little tree will grow to have a dense, rounded crown of dark-green needles, 3 or even 4 feet across, standing 4 to 5 feet tall. In summer the needles take on a gray-blue tone, and in winter become a golden green. The beauty of this variety is you don’t need to trim it to keep that desirable dense form – it produces many short stems with evenly-spread needles, and is naturally dense without any extra work required. This Mops Mugo Pine Tree is sure to please, planted in smaller beds for height, or as a feature in a rock garden. Place a pair on either side of a gate or doorway, or even grow it in a pot or planter, perhaps with a trailing plant beneath it, for a very attractive feature on your terrace, or on a broad step.

  • Dense, neat dome of needles raised on a strong trunk
  • Naturally dense and rounded without any trimming needed
  • Needles are rich dark-green, turning blue-gray in summer and golden-green in winter
  • Excellent, easy-care feature in smaller beds or pots
  • trouble-free and ignored by deer

Out in full sun is the best place for your Mops Mugo Pine Tree, which will grow happily in any well-drained soil, from clays to sands. Very good resistance to cold, but note that this tree form is only hardy in zone 4 (compared to zone 2 or 3 when grown in its natural form). Plants grown in pots can be left outdoors all winter from zone 5. Untroubled by deer and generally pest-free in most areas. The traditional ‘candling’ – trimming of new shoots – isn’t needed with this compact variety, which is a great saving on garden chores.
