Tree-form evergreens are popular, but for one that makes the perfect tree with a rounded crown – and stays that way – consider the Gnome Mugo Pine Tree. This compact variety is well-known for staying neat, dense and small, and attached to the top of a thick stem, it is the perfect vision of a miniature tree. The crown will take 10 years to be 3 feet wide, with a flattened top, and needs no trimming or special attention to be that way. The many short stems are thickly covered in short needles that are rich dark green, and stay that way throughout the year, never yellowing or turning blue. Easy to grow, trouble-free and low-maintenance, this is the way to have that neat tree look you crave, but in miniature, perfect for small gardens, tiny accents, and also for growing in pots (from zone 5) to decorate a terrace or balcony – you don’t even need a garden to enjoy this unique plant

  • The perfect miniature tree, with a neat, compact crown
  • Full crown of branches, needing no trimming
  • the richly colored green needles stay that way year-round
  • Hardy even in zone 3, and in zone 5 when grown in a pot
  • Won’t outgrow its spot, and ideal for small gardens and limited space

The Gnome Mugo Pine Tree should be grown in full sun for the best results. It grows readily in all soil types, as long as they are well-drained, and will grow in poor soil, rocky soil and urban gardens. It is hardy in zone 3, and in zone 5 you can grow it in a pot and leave it outdoors all winter. Grows best in areas with cold winters and cooler summers, and won’t do as well in place with summers that are very hot and humid. Deer will ignore it, and it is normally free of pests and diseases in most areas, and in suitable climates. It doesn’t need trimming but for a super-compact look take out the tips of the new shoots, called ‘candles’, before the needles open out.
