If you are looking for an elegant and handsome full-sized pine tree, look no further. The Bonna Scots Pine is fast-growing, and quickly develops into a beautiful, irregular pyramid of branches, growing to a height of 25 feet or more, and being at least 15 feet across. It has bright cinnamon red bark, which makes a bold contrast with the blue needles. In fact, it has the bluest needles of all the Scots pine varieties – a striking silver-blue – so it looks elegant and beautiful all year round. This variety retains its branches to the ground much longer than ordinary Scots pines, and the irregular habit makes every tree a unique specimen. Very winter hardy, it’s a gift to gardeners in cold regions. You can also take this tree in a different direction, and with trimming and pruning make a smaller specimen of just about any form you want. It could have a central stem with side branches, or be a multi-branched ‘poodle’ tree too – the choice is yours.

  • Vigorous, fast-growing pine to 25 feet tall or more
  • Pyramidal form to 15 feet across, keeping branches to the ground
  • Considered the bluest of all the varieties of Scots pine
  • Very cold tolerant, right through zone 3
  • Can be trimmed and pruned into many different forms

Plant the Bonna Scots Pine out in the sun, in a well-drained soil. It grows well even in poor, sandy soils, and is happy in acidic soils too. Hardy in zone 3, and enjoys colder parts of the country, not doing as well where summers are very hot and humid. It isn’t eaten by deer, and doesn’t have any significant pest or disease problems. A great tree for new gardeners who don’t want to just grow the ‘same old, same old’. Control the size and form by trimming the new growth (candles). You can also prune out branches to expose more of the attractive bark and make a unique specimen for your garden.
