The Serviceberry is a small tree or large shrub that blooms early in the year, with pure-white blossoms covering the bare branches. The bark is smooth and an attractive pale gray color that is especially beautiful in the winter. In summer a heavy crop of purple-red berries is produced, which are great for eating raw, baking or in preserves. In fall the round leaves turn beautiful shades of red and gold, a real glory to see. This attractive plant is an ideal garden shrub that is not only beautiful but valuable for its fruit ā a real two-for-one benefit in a smaller garden.
The Serviceberry will grow well in most soils and is hardy to zone 4, so it will do well almost anywhere, even growing well in Canada. It grows best with good-drainage, but some moisture.
