The Yellow Ribbon Arborvitae is a colorful upright evergreen that thrives even in the coldest parts of the country. It has a band of yellow foliage all around each branch, with darker lime-green foliage deeper inside the tree. The yellow is flushed with orange is spring, and the gold color persists through the year. This plant is hardy even in zone 2, but it can also be grown all the way into zone 7. It reaches 10 feet tall within 10 years, and stays just 2 or 3 feet wide, making it a perfect choice for smaller gardens and smaller spaces. Grow it as a specimen in a bed, or on a lawn, plant it singly or in groups around your house, or make a colorful screen or hedge with it. This tree is a great source of year-round color for any garden.
The Yellow Ribbon Arborvitae will develop the strongest golden color when grown in full sun, but it will also grow well in partial shade. Plant it in ordinary garden soil, and it tolerates damp soil very well. Once established it has some drought tolerance, but it should be watered deeply during extended dry periods. Water well in late fall to protect from winter injury. It needs no clipping to keep its compact shape, but it can be clipped in spring for a denser form if you wish. This tree has no important pests or diseases, and it usually thrives with little or no care – perfect for the busy gardener.
