Dwarf in proportion to the large tree that is its parent, the Dwarf Blue Arizona Fir is a magnificent conical evergreen tree with gorgeous powder-blue needles, growing in time to 8 feet tall or more, and ideal for smaller gardens where you want the classic blue, conical evergreen, but don’t have room for a full-sized tree. Thriving in colder zones, this beautiful tree has stems tightly packed with flat needles, giving a soft look that is emphasized by the beautiful blue coloring. Side branches radiate out in perfect symmetry from an upright central stem. Ideal for a specimen on a small lawn; in a large rock garden; on a sunny slope; among shrubs in beds; in a natural planting of grasses and perennials, and even in a large planter box. Older trees may produce upright purple cones like those seen on other fir trees. Not suitable for areas with hot, humid summers. Drought tolerant once established. Often called ‘Glauca’ because of the blue needles.
The Dwarf Blue Arizona Fir should be planted in full sun. Grows best in gritty or rocky soil that is well-drained, and it is less suitable for heavy clay soils. Water young plants regularly, but once mature it has good drought tolerance. Cold hardy and thrives in colder zones, but is less suitable for areas with hot, humid summers. Problem free and easy to grow in suitable soils and climates. Best grown without trimming, but keep a single central leading stem and remove any extra shoots that could develop into second main stems.
