If you have never grown a plum, or grown an older variety and perhaps been disappointed by disease issues, then we suggest you grow the AU-Rubrum Plum Tree. This modern variety is simply outstanding, with delicious plums with deep red skin and flesh. Disease-resistance is excellent, and this is a self-pollinating plum, so if you have limited space you just need this one tree for a big crop. It grows fast, and within just a few years you could be harvesting 50 to 100 pounds of fruit from a single tree – fruit that is great for eating fresh, baking, and for preserves. It stores for up to 2 months in the fridge too, so there is no rush to use it all up before it goes to waste. The fruit is ripe around the middle of June, nice and early to fill the ‘fruit gap’ before trees like peaches or apples begin to fruit. Plus, while plum trees always have a relatively short life-span, this one is still vigorous and cropping well when 10 years old, and will keep going for years after that.
Plant your AU-Rubrum Plum Tree in full sun, or with just an hour or two of shade each day. Plant in any well-drained soil – it’s vigorous yet long-lived, and easy to grow. Very good resistance to bacterial canker fruit and leaf spots, black knot and leaf scald, so spraying is rarely needed. Insects can be controlled easily with safe Neem Oil spray, if necessary. Prune your young tree in spring when the buds begin to open, and older trees in June, removing some central branches to develop an open, vase-shaped bush. Shorten back growth from the previous year by up to one-third, to keep your tree compact and producing lots of flowers.
