Actually a hybrid between the Austrian pine and the Japanese white pine, and with all the vigor hybrids have, the Brepo Dwarf Austrian Pine is the toughest and most reliable of all the ball-shaped pine trees. It forms a perfect ball of stems that looks wonderful at any time of year. The green needles keep their color year-round, and they have a slight twist to add interest. Bark on older stems is dark brown, with attractive flaking effects. Growing about 6 inches a year, it won’t be long until you have a glorious rounded bush 5 feet tall and wide. One day it could easily be twice that, always keeping the perfect ball shape. Of course, you can also prune it – exposing the lower branches is a great idea for a more exotic look – but whether you do or don’t, this great bush fits into any kind of garden. It gives a neat formal look if that is your goal – how about on either side of the front door? But it also looks great in an Asian-style garden, clustered on a slope or bank, or among rocks and gravel with other evergreens. It even grows at the beach, making it perfect for the cottage.

  • Perfect neat ball of tight green needles looks great in any garden
  • Grows to 5 feet or more within 10 years
  • Vigorous and reliable in any garden
  • Tolerant of salt spray and coastal conditions
  • Easily kept more compact or pruned into an open form

Choose a spot in full sun for the Brepo Dwarf Austrian Pine and plant it in any well-drained soil. It isn’t particular about soil type, growing easily in just about anything that isn’t wet, from clay to sand and acidic to alkaline. Tolerant of salt-spray and grows well in coastal areas. It is ignored by deer and is normally pest and disease-free. For a more compact size, remove part of the new shoots (candles) before the needles grow out. You can take just a little, or most of the candle, depending on your goal. You can also remove lower branches on an older plant to give a more exotic look.
