The Columnar Blue Spruce is a unique and striking upright form of the popular blue spruce tree. Instead of spreading outwards and forming an enormous tree, this selected form grows upwards into a beautiful cigar-shape, creating the opportunity to have that iconic blue tree even in a small garden. It grows 6 to 12 inches a year, so you will not have long to wait for a tree you can decorate as an outdoor Christmas tree, and enjoy the rest of the year as a striking lawn specimen. It is hardy to minus 40 degrees, so it grows well in all the coldest areas where many other trees cannot survive. Not only was this plant selected for its unique narrow form, it also has intensely blue foliage that will bring dramatic color all year round. It can be planted as a lawn specimen, in your beds with other small trees, as a taller plant around your home, and even as a striking hedge or screen, which will need little or no trimming to keep its beautiful neat form.
Plant your Columnar Blue Spruce in a sunny location. It will grow in most soils, except for ones that are always wet. Keep young trees well-watered, but a mature tree is drought resistant, and this tree is deer resistant too. A neat, tidy and dense screen can be created by planting in a row, and they will not need trimming to stay narrow and upright. No winter protection or other special care is needed to enjoy this beautiful evergreen tree in your garden, especially if you do not have the room needed for a large, wide-spreading specimen tree.
