Gardeners in colder zones may miss out on some plants, but when it comes to conifers, and pines in particular, they really win. For example, you need a cooler climate to enjoy the striking beauty of the Columnar Scots Pine, a gorgeous vertical accent tree that is fast-growing, and will push up to 25 feet in time, but be barely more than 6 feet wide. With year-round beauty from the long blue-green needles, this really is one of the very best of the narrow, upright evergreens, making a striking exclamation point in your garden. Plant it perhaps on either side of the door of your house, or a gate. Grow it out on a lawn, in a corner where two walls meet around your home, or on a slope. This beautiful and easy accent tree will look great almost anywhere, just don’t plant it underneath overhead wires. The twisted blue-green needles are in clusters of two along the branches, and older trees carry 3-inch cones, adding to the decorative beauty of this tree.

  • The perfect accent, soon reaching 25 feet tall, but hardly more than 6 feet wide
  • Twisted blue-green needles are beautiful every day of the year
  • Excellent accent tree for gardeners in colder zones
  • Grows well in zone 3, and in all cooler parts of the country
  • Needs no trimming to keep its perfect pencil shape

Plant the Columnar Scots Pine in a sunny spot, and be sure the soil is well-drained. This tree thrives even in poor soils, including acidic soils and sandy ones too. It has moderate drought tolerance once established and isn’t bothered by deer. Grows best in cooler zones, and not so happy in hot, humid summers. Grows well in zones 3 and 4, and all the way into zone 7. Generally free of pests or diseases in appropriate climates. No trimming is needed but in areas with heavy snow we recommend running a cord around it for the winter to keep the upright branches from splitting in a snowfall.
