An appealing ball of blue beauty, the Dwarf Blue Scots Pine has a lot of charm in a small package. Not that small though, because growing around 6 inches a year it will certainly stay compact for a long time, but will one day be as much as 10 feet tall and wide – not a full-sized tree of course, but hardly ‘dwarf’ anymore. So allow for this when locating this beautiful bush in your garden. A mound of upright branches, the stiff needles are a striking blue-green, and clothe the branches densely, making the perfect plant for a rock garden, or among boulders and gravel. Tuck it into a shrub bed too, or add it to a collection of plants on a sunny bank. Hardy even in zone 3, this unique form of the normally tall Scots Pine is easy to grow and a plant that will give you lots of pleasure as it steadily expands into an impressive bush of considerable beauty. A great addition to any medium-sized to large garden.
Grow the Dwarf Blue Scots Pine in full sun, and plant it in almost any well-drained soil. Happy in acidic soils and poor, sandy soils too. Hardy in zone 3, and does best in areas with cooler summers. Moderately drought tolerant and left alone by deer, with no particular pests or diseases to watch out for. Grows well in urban gardens too. With age it has a tendency to spread wider than tall, so some trimming (candling) of new shoots in spring can be helpful in maintaining that compact globe shape.
