Dwarf White Pine is a very attractive shrub-like form of the native white pine tree. It grows slowly into an irregular mounded shape, reaching anything between 4 and 7 feet tall in time, and spreading 6 to 10 feet across. Its shape and form can be controlled by trimming and pruning, but left to grow naturally it has a rugged, informal look that is valuable in any garden, but especially in informal or Asian-themed gardens. It grows well as part of the foundation planting around your home, in a rock garden, or in the foreground of larger shrubs. This tree is hardy throughout zone 3, so it is a very valuable addition to gardens in the coldest parts of the country. It is the perfect choice for smaller gardens, or for areas in larger gardens where smaller evergreens are needed.

  • Beautiful dwarf form of a native pine tree
  • Soft blue-green needles and gray bark
  • Grows to around 5 feet tall and 8 feet across
  • Irregular form for informal and Asian gardens
  • Hardy to minus 40 degrees, and easy to grow

Dwarf White Pine grows best in full sun, but it will also grow in a spot with a little shade. It grows in most soils, if they are well-drained. It has few significant pests or diseases, but it should be protected from road salt. Its size can be controlled by cutting new shoots back by one-half or more, and it can also be pruned to show its beautiful soft-gray bark. Old trees may produce attractive cones.
