Most gardener’s vision of the Mugo pine is a compact, round bush just a few feet tall and wide. But if you buy cheaper plants simply labeled ‘Mugo pine’ you are taking a gamble. These seedling trees are very variable, and you may find yourself with a larger, irregular bush with open branches, needing annual trimming to come anywhere remotely near your vision. If you want to be sure of that neat, rounded bush, then look no further than the Gnome Mugo Pine. This selected tree will be a tight mound of stems no more than 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide after 10 years, without trimming. This dwarf selection won’t outgrow its allotted space, and is ideal for small gardens, courtyards, and for making easy bonsai. The beautiful dark-green needles hold their rich color through winter and summer, always looking perfect. A tight mound of many short branches, this is one Mugo pine that isn’t going to consume your beds with sprawling limbs.
Plant it out in full sun and your Gnome Mugo Pine will be happy. It grows just fine in any well-drained soil, and is very tolerant of different soils, from sands to clays, and in rocky ground too. Very winter hardy and even grows in warmer parts of zone 2. It loves cold winters and cool summers. This tree isn’t suitable if you have hot and humid summers with high temperatures. It isn’t eaten by deer and in suitable climates it rarely has pest or disease problems. One thing you won’t have to do is trim it, unless you have it as a bonsai.
