Gulf Stream Heavenly Bamboo is a beautiful foliage plant that is especially colorful both in spring and fall. The new spring growth is bright red and dramatic, and in fall the leaves turn beautiful vibrant shades of red and orange. The foliage is divided into many small leaflets, giving the plant an airy look like bamboo, but it is not invasive like bamboo can sometimes be. This dwarf plant stays 3 or perhaps 4 feet tall, so it fits well into smaller gardens. It can be grown all around the garden, and also in pots or planters. It has no pests or diseases and this variety produces few or no seeds, so it cannot become invasive. It is harder all through zone 6, so it can be grown in all but the coldest parts of the country.
Choose a sunny location for the Gulf Stream Heavenly Bamboo, as direct sun will develop the strongest colors. However, the plant will grow well even in shade, so it can be grown almost anywhere. Add plenty of organic material to the soil when planting, and water regularly until it is well established. Mature plants are drought resistant, but they benefit from regular watering. This easy to grow plant has no pests or diseases, and it needs no special care at all. It can be pruned by removing a few older stems at ground level, to keep it a little shorter, but even that is not necessary for your plants to always look spectacular.
