The Austrian pine is well-known as a tough evergreen tree, but while just as tough, Hornibrook’s Austrian Pine is no tree. This unique dwarf plant forms a low mound of horizontal branches, rising no more than 1 or 2 feet into the air, but ultimately spreading up to 6 feet across. A plant for lovers of dwarf varieties, this attractive and unique plant has dark-green needles 2 inches long, clustered in pairs all along the branches. Starting life as a dense clump of stems, in time it will have multiple upright shoots, each developing side branches, to become a very appealing irregular, spreading bush. Allow room for its spread when planting, growing less valuable plants around it that could be moved or removed in time. Perfect on slopes, at the top of retaining walls, or growing among boulders and gravel as part of a collection of unique dwarf evergreens.
For good growth locate your Hornibrook’s Austrian Pine in full sun, and grow it in well-drained soils of any type. Happy in rocky soils too. Winter hardy in zone 3 and grows best in areas with cold winters and moderate summers. Not recommended for the midwest, or areas with hot, humid summers. Deer leave it alone and it is usually free of problems if grown in a suitable climate. No trimming or pruning is needed, but candles could be trimmed if you want an even lower carpet effect.
