The mugo pine is deservedly popular with northern gardeners, and admired for its compact, rounded, bushy shape. But sometimes it can disappoint, and become a gangly, taller plant of no special merit, and bigger than the spot you had planned for it. This is because a lot of cheaper plants are grown from seed, and this plant is genetically very variable, often producing much larger bushes. If you want a guaranteed compact form, then look no further than the Mops Mugo Pine. Selected for its compact, dense form, and grown by grafting, not seed, this plant will mature into a dense bush no more than 4 feet tall and wide. Perfect where you want a handsome round evergreen, this variety needs no tedious trimming of new shoots, or other ‘tricks’ to keep it small – it is naturally small and will continue to be small. Forming a solid round bush, it produces many short stems, with evenly-spaced needles – the secret to its density and why you don’t need to trim it. The needles have a bluish tone during summer and often turn a warm golden-green in winter.

  • Perfect round dome 4 feet tall and wide – without any trimming
  • Dense branching and lots of needles along every stem
  • Extremely cold tolerant and unaffected by heavy snowfalls
  • Dark-green needles turn bluish in summer and golden in winter
  • No need for tedious trimming of new shoots

Plant the Mops Mugo Pine in full sun, in any well-drained soil, in just about any kind of soil, from clay to sand. A tough, reliable plant for northern gardens and in all areas with cooler summers. Naturally-dense growth means no need to trim young stems – just let it grow. Not eaten by deer, and resists heavy snowfalls. Pest free in most areas, and easy to grow.
