Purple Fountain Grass is a medium-sized perennial grass that forms an arching clump of upright leaves to about 2 feet, that are slender, flat, and a rich burgundy-purple color. From mid-summer long spikes of grass flowers rise above the leaves to as much as 4 feet, with 12-inch fuzzy heads of purple, gradually turning a sandy pink by fall. This beautiful plant is an easy and reliable way to bring excitement and interest into your garden beds or planters. Grow it along a pathway, in a hot area with rocks and gravel, or in planter boxes and pots to decorate a terrace or patio.
Plant your Purple Fountain Grass in a sunny place for the best color and strongest growth. It grows well in almost all soils, even poor dry ones, and in hot places. Avoid wet soil and areas with poor drainage. This plant is not frost-resistant and it should be kept in a frost-free place over the winter months, and replanted again outdoors in spring. It is free of pests, diseases and deer resistant too. It is a sterile hybrid that cannot produce seed, so it is safe to grow, even in hot zones where regular fountain grass can be invasive.
