For a striking ornamental small tree that is also very drought and heat tolerant, you canāt beat Raywoodās Weeping Arizona Cypress. This remarkable plant is a unique selection of a tough native tree that not only takes lots of heat and drought, but is also relatively fast growing, adding about 15 inches of new growth each year. This special variety is a fully weeping plant that can be left to grow as an irregular mound of branches sprawling across the ground, among boulders or over a wall. |it is more often, though, staked to have an upright central leading stem, from which the side branches fall vertically. Within 10 years it can be 20 feet tall, but only 2 or 3 feet wide ā an amazing sight. The foliage is a beautiful silver blue-gray, adding to the unique character of this very special tree.
Raywoodās Weeping Arizona Cypress should be planted in full sun, and once established it is extremely drought tolerant, and thrives in heat and intense summer conditions. It grows in any well-drained soil, including rocky and sandy soils, and alkaline soils too. An extremely tough tree it is also generally ignored by deer and has no pests or diseases of any importance. Use a strong, long-lasting metal stake to support the central leader and create a trunk from which the side branches will fall. No need to trim or prune ā just let your tree develop its own unique, personal character.
