The Ruby Sweet Plum Tree is well-named, because that’s exactly what you get – ruby-red skin and sweet red flesh. This delicious plum is great eaten fresh in July, when it ripens, or turned into delicious pies and preserves that keep forever. It stores for a month or even two in the fridge, so you can spread out using it over weeks and weeks. Vigorous and fast-growing, it makes a small tree that yields big, well over 50 pounds of plums from one tree in just a few years. It has excellent tolerance of hot conditions, and we recommend it for the southeast. Plums are among the easiest of fruit trees to grow, adding up to 4 feet in a year, and produce fruit earlier than just about any other fruit tree. Pretty white flowers on the bare branches in spring round out the garden value of this tree. It is not self-fertile, and should be grown within 100 feet of another Japanese plum variety, like Ozark Premier.

  • Sweet red flesh beneath a ruby-red skin
  • A heavy cropper, ripening in July
  • Very heat tolerant, and great for the southeast
  • Disease-resistant and fast-growing
  • Needs another Japanese plum variety nearby to set a full crop

the Ruby Sweet Plum Tree should be planted in a sunny spot, in a well-drained soil enriched with compost. Water as needed, especially when the crop is ripening. It has good resistance to major diseases, making it much easier to grow than older varieties are. For insect control use safe and natural Neem Oil spray. Prune in spring or early summer to reduce disease risks, and develop a vase-shaped form for good ripening of all the crop. Reduce new stems by about one-third to keep it compact and blooming well.
