When you want a blue spruce, you mean ‘blue’. Well, for a full-sized spruce tree in a magnificent blue coloring, nothing beats the Select Blue Colorado Spruce. It grows into a magnificent pyramid of sparkling blue needles on horizontal branches, and makes a great lawn specimen, or, planted in a row, a great screening plant or boundary marker. Growing to 50 feet tall and 30 feet wide, be sure to allow enough space for that final size – we have all seen the houses overwhelmed by a big tree planted too close, right? Place it well away from your home, and check for overhead wires too. With a straight central trunk and spreading branches like the spokes of a wheel, this beautiful tree is grafted – it isn’t a random seedling that’s just a bit more blue than the natural green – so you really get the true blue you want. Super hardy, drought tolerant and reliable, this is the tree you have been looking for – look no further.
Out in full sun is the best place for your Select Blue Colorado Spruce, and plant it in well-drained soil. It can be poor, sandy, rocky, or even clay if it isn’t low-lying, but not shady places or spots that are always wet. Very cold resistant, it will even grow in zone 2, and in warmer zones that don’t have humid, hot summers for long periods. Deer never eat it, and pests or diseases are rare. Develops its shape naturally, but watch that the top growing stem doesn’t’ divide – remove any competing stems when you see them, to keep a strong central leader and a perfect form.
