If you like ‘neat’ in your garden, then the Sherwood Compact Mugo Pine Tree is for you. This outstanding and coveted variety of Mugo Pine is perhaps the most dense and solid variety in existence, with superb form and short, slightly twisted needles densely covering every branch in the most gorgeous way. The needles are a deep, rich green, developing golden tips during winter. This charming variety grows slowly into a compact ball up to 3 feet across and 4 feet tall. We had our growers attach it to a short trunk, raising it up in the air so its beauty can really be appreciated. The perfect miniature tree, it looks great in garden beds or rock gardens, and in pots too, where it could be a feature on a terrace. Grow it as part of an easy-care collection of dwarf evergreens, among boulders and gravel – one of the best garden features, and one that needs almost no maintenance – which will look better and better every year.

  • A superb variety with very dense branching and thick needles
  • A beautiful miniature tree that is a great garden feature
  • Many short, solid branches that need no trimming to stay compact
  • Stands about 4 feet tall, with a crown 3 feet across
  • Compact form means no need for tedious trimming

The Sherwood Compact Mugo Pine Tree will grow best in full sun, which keeps it dense and compact. It grows easily in any well-drained soil, which could be clay, loam or sand. Happy in poor soils too, and tolerated urban conditions. Although the pine itself is hardy to zone 2, when grown as a tree like this zone 4 is probably the coldest, unless you use winter protection. Plants in pots could be left outdoors all winter in zone 5 or warmer. This plant is best grown in areas with cold winters and cooler, moist summers – not tolerant of intense heat and high humidity.
