The star-shaped blooms of the Skyfall Hydrangea pack the dense, conical heads of this shrub, with each head being a full 12 inches tall. Blooming in abundance, on strong stems, it isn’t a tall plant, standing only 4 feet tall and about 3 feet wide. This amazing new introduction from Europe is turning heads in every garden it is grown in. The pure-white blooms stand proud and upright all summer, gradually turning wonderful shades of antique rose-pink as the cooler weather of fall arrives. It’s vigorous, trouble-free and takes much more sun and dryness than the mophead hydrangea. Grow it among your shrubs, make a wonderful border along a pathway, or grow it in a pot to bring wonder to your porch. It’s a gift from the sky.
Cold-tolerant even in zone 4, this form of the panicle hydrangea is easy to grow, and prefers full sun in cold zones and afternoon shade in hotter ones. It also grows in continuous light shade. Plant in any soil, preferably one that is rich and moist, but ordinary garden conditions are just fine for this tough guy. Will take drier conditions in summer than mophead hydrangeas. Generally free of pest or disease problems, except for deer. Prune in early spring, removing weak, twiggy growth and shortening branches from the previous year back by about half.
