Many gardeners admire the Himalayan Cedar, but most varieties become large trees in time, and you might have a small garden, or a spot where you need a smaller tree. Not only is the Snow Sprite Himalayan Cedar much smaller, reaching only about 10 feet tall, but it has the wonderful added bonus of rare white tips on new growth, giving it an amazing soft, glowing look. New growth is ivory-white and then turns creamy-yellow, giving this tree a wonderful and unique look that will stop everyone in their tracks. It grows at a moderate rate, about 8 inches a year, and slows as it matures, so you will have a wonderful upright cone of spreading branches, pendulous at their tips, on a compact tree of great beauty. Young trees grow in an irregular way, making a mound of branches, until one branch takes the lead and it becomes more tree-like. You can preserve the mounding form by removing branches that push up into a more upright, taller stem. Grow this tree out on a lawn, or in a prominent position on a slope or among rocks and boulders. Give it plenty of room – it will spread over 6 feet wide. This is a simply gorgeous tree, and one that will enhance your garden enormously, even if you don’t have the space for a large evergreen.

  • Irregular mounding plant when young, becoming more tree-like with age
  • Horizontal branches with pendulous tips gives a weeping look
  • Striking new growth of soft white becoming pale yellow
  • Ideal for smaller spaces, growing only 10 feet tall and 6 feet wide
  • Grow with some afternoon shade in hot zones

You can grow the Snow Sprite Himalayan Cedar in full sun, but in hotter zones some afternoon shade is desirable. This not only protects against burning, in the shade this tree literally glows like a beacon. Plant it in any well-drained soil, with a preference for porous, acidic soils enriched with compost or organic materials. Deer leave it alone and pests or diseases are very rare – this is an easy plant to grow in most gardens. Drought tolerant when established, but a slow, deep soak during extended dry periods will be appreciated. Don’t trim – enjoy the natural growth that makes each individual unique.
