The Sugar Tyme Crab Apple is a beautiful flowering tree that is reliable in both very cold zones and hot & humid ones too. It carries a heavy bloom of pure white blossoms, opening from soft pink buds. These are followed by big crops of cherry-sized fruits, that begin bright red and darken to maroon and burgundy over winter. They stay on the tree right through the coldest months. This tree grows to 20 feet tall and almost as wide, making it ideal for a specimen on a lawn, avenues, or at the back of large beds.
Plant the Sugar Tyme Crab Apple in full sun, in any well-drained soil. It needs no pollinator to carry a big crop, and it will pollinate almost all eating apples too. It is very disease resistant to scab, mildew and fire blight, so it stays lush and green, with a full leafy crown, all summer long. No pruning is needed for it to flower and fruit well, but if you do trim for shape, do it in summer, during dry weather. Pests are normally not a problem with this fast-growing and vigorous tree.
