If you think of Mugo pine as a rounded bush sitting on the ground, the Tannenbaum Mugo Pine will make you think again. This unique variety grows into an upright pyramid of branches – picture the perfect Christmas tree – that still has all the great winter hardiness and overall easy-care of the Mugo pine. Growing about 6 inches a year, it will become a gorgeous small tree in time, about 10 feet tall and 6 feet across at the base, with the potential of reaching 15 feet one day, and being 12 feet across. Dense branching forms a gorgeous pyramid with no gaps or spaces, and the many tight branches grow upright, surrounding a single trunk that creates the height. The short, thick needles cover the stems completely, and they are rich green, developing blue-green coloring in summer. Older trees produce an abundance of attractive small cones. A very different form of this popular tree, yet still as tough and hardy as more familiar varieties. Perfect as a specimen in a large rock garden, on slopes, in beds, and even out on a lawn.
Grow your Tannenbaum Mugo Pine out in full sun for the best and densest growth. Plant it in any well-drained soil – it tolerates everything from sand to clay. Very winter hardy even to zone 2, and grows best in areas with cold winters and cooler summers. Not tolerant of high humidity and intense heat. Untroubled by deer and free of pests in most parts of the country. Trimming isn’t necessary, but watch that it keeps a single central stem, shortening back any competing stems, so that it retains its pyramidal form.
