Picea omorika ‘Pendula’ is more commonly referred to as weeping Serbian spruce, which is actually a name used for a handful of different spruces and can cause some confusion. This particular example ought not to be confused with ‘pendula bruns’ which has an extraordinary growth habit, although there are similarities. Pendula can be easily manipulated to produce a tall and exceedingly striking conical tree whose branches sweep towards the ground with heavy pendulous needles. However, as it does not grow with a central leader, you can choose to let it mound and scramble or even train it to arch over pathways, allowing a delightful curtain of deep green needles to develop. This is a stunning and versatile spruce that makes a superb specimen tree or feature in any landscape. When staked young it will form a lovely upright tree reaching heights of around 40 feet with a width of around eight feet, but can sometimes exceed both.
