Nothing beats a bold, slender column of green for accent in your garden, and nothing beats the Woodward Columnar Juniper for delivering exactly that. Growing to a height of around 20 feet, and still only 3 or 4 feet wide, it needs absolutely no trimming to keep that tight, dense look we admire so much in columnar evergreens. The deep green needles turn blue-gray in winter, adding interest, and it sheds snow without any need for netting. Wind resistant too, it takes drought, poor soil, heat and cold, and is about as tough as any juniper can be. Grow it for emphasis anywhere in your garden, perhaps as a focal point at the end of a long stretch of lawn, or as a pair on either side of a doorway. Plant it in the most formal setting, or in a semi-wild part of your garden too. This selection of a plant native to North America truly delivers the look you want, and is free of problems for easy, low-maintenance gardening.

  • Slender, tight column of dark green without any trimming needed
  • Foliage turns blue-gray in winter
  • 20 feet tall and only 4 feet wide – naturally
  • Very tolerant of drought, sun, heat, cold and deer
  • Great choice for vertical accents anywhere in your garden

Grow the Woodward Columnar Juniper in full sun, in any well-drained soil, and that includes poor, rocky or sandy soils, and even clays if they are on a slope or high part of your garden. Avoid wet areas and while young plants need some regular watering, once established this plant is very drought tolerant. It isn’t bothered by deer either, and rarely if ever has any pest or disease problems. In windy locations it may be best to stake it for a couple of years while the roots spread out for stability. Trimming isn’t needed, but hey, go ahead if you want to.
