The Yaku Jima Maiden Grass is a very beautiful ornamental grass, smaller than most other maiden grasses, and so it’s suitable for smaller spaces, as well as pots and planters. It forms an elegant fountain of thread-like leaves rising 3 or 4 feet, topped by feathery plumes of grass flowers that begin buff-pink and then turn silver. The leaves turn reddish in fall, and then beige for the winter. Use it to soften plantings everywhere in your garden, as well as on small lawns and beside water. Use a row to finish a courtyard wall or along a fence. Attractive from late spring to late winter.
Grow your Yaku Jima Maiden Grass in full sun, or with only a couple of hours of shade each day. All well-drained soils are suitable, even poor and sandy soils, and established plants are drought resistant. It is normally untouched by pests, diseases, deer or rabbits, and it resists salt spray too. Super-easy to grow, all it takes in a spring (or fall) trim and it is up and running for another year.
